Overview of the Main Window
The Copernic Desktop Search main window features a toolbar that provides access to specified search categories and commands. It also features a left pane with three sections: Search For, Refine Search (except for Web Search, Favorites and History categories) and Details. For most categories, the main section of the window features a result list and document preview panes. For a comprehensive description of each search category's interface, use the above menu to browse to the appropriate help page.
The toolbar buttons provide access to search categories, options, commands and help contents.
The Web Search first button allows you to search the Web for news, products, sites, and so on, using predefined categories. The following eight buttons refer to the available desktop search categories. They require different interfaces as each desktop search category offers specific search and result viewing features.
The Options button lets you open the corresponding window where you can customize the software and manage index contents. The black arrow located at the right site of the Options button provides access to a drop-down menu including these commands:
The Help button allows you to open the Copernic Desktop Search help topics. You can also click the black arrow located at the right site of the Help button to display the help menu and use one of the following commands:
The Copernic Desktop Search logo allows you to open the About Copernic Desktop Search window directly.
Search For Section
This section lets you detail a query in a search box. You can use Boolean operators (AND/+, OR, NOT/-) and parentheses to refine your query. You can also use quotes for exact phrases or whole words.
You can click the search button (green arrow) or hit the Enter key to launch the query. This should not be required normally because results are displayed and filtered when you enter any letter in the search box (prefix searching) or select a criterion in a drop-down list of the Refine Search section.
Refine Search Section
This section allows you to refine a query with search fields offering criteria and/or search boxes to enter keywords, depending on the case. These search boxes also allow you to use Boolean operators (AND/+, OR, NOT/-), parentheses and quotes (for exact phrases or whole words). For further information, refer to each appropriate search category’s help page (the Web Search, Favorites and History categories do not feature search fields).
The Details section, displayed when a result is selected, is located at the bottom of the left hand side of the window. It presents a useful, concise profile of the selected result's main properties. The Details section of the desktop search categories features useful shortcuts to other applications related to the category involved.
Copernic Desktop Search uses the upper-right pane of the main window to display search results while it uses all the right section of the main window for the Music, Images, Videos, and Contacts category result lists. The header of this pane varies depending on search categories and results contents. Also, this pane features a specific right-click menu for each search category, including additional shortcuts to those already available in the Details section for some categories.
To open a found document directly through the software, just double click on the corresponding result.
Two different modes can be used to view the results related to the desktop search categories: Standard View and Detailed View. Displayed fields of view modes vary depending on the view selected.
To change the viewing mode:
Results related to the desktop search categories can be sorted in several different ways and shown in groups. Sorting results means changing the order in which they are displayed according to a specific criterion, whereas grouping them implies breaking the order by creating small groups instead of a continuous list without affecting the sorting order in any way. The Contacts category does not allow grouping because the Name and Address sorting orders do not really need to be grouped. Sorting fields may be different from one category to another.
To modify the sorting order:
If you wish to group results, click also the Show in Groups option in the drop-down list of the Arrange by command. Examples of groups for the Document field: Adobe Acrobat Document, HTML Document, Microsoft Word Document.
Expanding or Collapsing Groups
You can expand or collapse the search results when they are grouped.
To change the collapsing status of a selected group, double click the header.
Available for Files, Emails, Favorites and History categories, this section displays a software-based preview of the selected file, email message or Web page. Search terms will be highlighted with a different color for each one in result lists of all search categories and in the preview panes of the Emails and Files categories. Also, for the two last mentioned categories, the software will scroll a document preview directly to the word or phrase that you are looking for.
The Status Bar
The status bar indicates the current application status such as the number of matching items and the index complete status: Indexing or Scanning (and folder's path), Idle, etc. The status bar also features at the extreme right a magnifying glass icon followed by a little black arrow and the index brief status Idle or Updating. Clicking any of these items displays a quick menu window which featuring commands described previously: Options, Indexing Status, Pause Indexing, Update Index, and Exit.
