The ongoing desktop search experience

“I'm back to Copernic because I don't like the way that Google Desktop jumbles all the different filetypes together. I don't like having to narrow down searches by using "filetype:doc" search commands.”

Copernic, a program that helps you find stuff on your PC
Posted on 2006-08-05 by Qumana
“I used Google Desktop for a while. It serves up the contents of your drive in the same way that the Google search engine serves up the contents of the Internet, in your browser. It’s an elegant solution, but wasn’t a natural fit for me. After I got my tablet PC, I spent a little time looking into alternatives and found one I like very much. It’s called Copernic [Desktop Search] and it’s a free download. It doesn’t use your browser to display search results; it puts up its own window where it is easy to narrow the search by category — to email, files, contacts, pictures, etc. It is also straightforward to refine the search. The search results are very well organized and easy to follow. You can even take actions on some of what it finds. For example, when I search through email, I inevitably end up looking through some garbage. I can delete those emails from the Copernic [Desktop Search] window. That’s useful. By default, the part of Copernic [Desktop Search] that is busy indexing and reindexing the contents of your hard drive suspends itself when the computer is active, waiting until things have been quiet for 2 minutes before resuming.”

Products I believe in
Posted on 2006-07-30 by Steve
“Copernic Desktop Search - forget google. Copernic is way better. Google may have added support for alternative file formats, but the results are still organized like search engine results. Copernic's results format is better, the document format support is better (or at least was), and it behaves like a windows application should. I own and believe in copernic's other products, but I have yet to use them as much as I really should.”

Copernic Desktop Search 2 Pre-Release
Posted on 2006-07-24 by Jerall Toi
“For those of you who don't know, desktop search software indexes and searches your own hard drive and documents, just as internet search engines search the web. It's very useful for finding old documents, sifting through emails and images etc very quickly. In a bid to not have everything on my machine be Google, I have been using Copernic Desktop Search for awhile now and have become as much of a fan as one can become of a piece of software. That's why I don't know how I missed it, but Copernic has launched a pre-release of their Desktop Search 2. I've been using it for two days now and I'm very impressed. I recommend you check it out…”

Stupid Writer Tricks: Choose the Right Tools

Favourite Tools - Copernic
Posted on 2006-07-06 by Mark Pope
“There are some tools which I really love. Near the top of my list is Copernic [Desktop Search…] I tried a few desktop search programs and Copernic [Desktop Search] is my favourite. Using Copernic [Desktop Search], you can key in a couple of keywords, and in a couple of seconds – bam – you’ve got a list of every email and file containing those words. You can then refine the search by being more specific about the sender or the type of file. If you’ve ever searched for email using the search feature in Outlook, you’ll never use it again. If you get a lot of email and you don’t already have a desktop search program, drop everything and install Copernic [Desktop Search] now. It’s free, and you’ll start raving about it too.”

Hard Drive Plunder Yields Unknown Treasure
Posted on 2006-06-27 by Mark Pope
“Is your hard drive akin to hundreds of year old tropical forest? Mine is - the whole 160 virtual acres of it. And that’s only one computer. I cringe when I think of sorting through stuff or even trying to organize it. This is definitely one of the drawbacks of obscenely huge drives. Whenever something goes in, it seems like it’s almost impossible to find when I need it. Do you feel that way? Don’t get me wrong. For the most part I’m pretty organized with my hard drive. I’ve got stuff filed in neat folders and I usually know where to find the most commonly used stuff yet sometimes despite my best efforts of searching some files still slip through the crack into virtual oblivion. Well actually it’s only hidden to the human eye. A while back, someone asked me about desktop search software, if I had some other suggestion other than Google Desktop, Yahoo or even MSN. Then, I didn’t like desktop search programs because I tried one and boy did it suck my resources big time. To make it worse, each time I wanted to find and open a file it seems the darn thing would kick into high gear slowing my computer down considerably and mind you, I have a fast PC. A month ago, forced into action by the rapidly growing jungle in my computer, I tried Copernic Desktop Search and I’m truly surprised at this thing. It’s not only fast but it does it’s job without getting in my way. The nice part about it is it can search network drives (those not on my computer). I can quickly filter my search by file, image, videos, music and get this email. To me the email part is the clincher because I don’t use Outlook, I use Thunderbird. And unlike Outlook, there are few tools that work with Thunderbird. So now, I don’t even have to power up Thunderbird just to search the emails (yet another virtual jungle). That is sweet. Since using Copernic [Desktop Search], I’ve found so many files I just never realized was there or completely forgotten about. The tool is free, and I recommend Copernic Desktop Search.”

Copernic 1.7 and 2.0 Beta
Posted on 2006-04-09 by rjdohnert
“The boys and girls over at Copernic have been busy. First they released a new version of Copernic version 1.7. It has a revised search bar for Explorer and now comes with Group Policy management. These are some of the features I have been looking forward to. The biggest enhancement is version 2.0 beta. I have been testing version 2.0 and when its finally released, the other desktop search guys might as well hang it up. Its got so many new features and enhancements it completely blows away every other desktop search tool on the market. Its a better desktop search tool on Windows Vista than Vista’s integrated search. For those of you that want a desktop search tool that beats or rivals even Mac OS X’s spotlight, Copernic is for you. In addition now Copernic will allow you to rebrand Copernic to make include your own brand. Meaning you can add your company logo or credits to Copernic Desktop Search similar to what AOL does.”

Copernic Desktop Search beats MSN
Posted on 2006-04-06 by Mikey P.
“Copernic Desktop Search is what a Windows app should be. Compact, single process, unobtrusive, and highly useful. The search results from Copernic are as fast and accurate as MSN, but they are much easier to digest with a clean presentation and UI. The auto-preview window is also fast and accurate. And as a nice touch, I can run it on my laptop as it has a setting to pause indexing when running on battery power.”

At last, the search is over
Posted on 2006-03-21 by Robert Matthews
“The desktop search engine, Copernic, does for the PC what Google does for the web, and with the same astonishing speed. No matter how big the hard drive, just type in a keyword or two and you can track down pretty much anything, even ancient emails. Copernic works by creating an index of everything on the hard drive. This index is created and updated whenever the computer is idle, and so has no effect on the machine's performance. The result is a lightning-fast search engine that needs few clues to track down the most vaguely remembered document or an old email address. There are other desktop search engines, but Copernic is the one hoovering up the plaudits and industry awards. That is not unrelated to how much it costs: absolutely nothing.”

The Solution to your GDS Problem is CDS
Posted on 2006-03-06 by Zoli Erdos
“can’t believe it: Google Desktop Search cannot track changes when you move files from a directory to another. That means the more you use your computer, the more your index will be out of sync. Perhaps that’s why they did not name it Desktop Find, because it only searches, does not find! The recommended solution: uninstall GDS, then install it again…then wait a few hours for the complete reindex. […] it should do its thing in the background, as if it wasn’t there at all. I have a better solution: get Copernic Desktop Search. It does not steal your data, does not come with a bunch of additional bloatware, it only does one thing, but does it really well: find and serve up your data.”

Copernic Desktop Search
Posted on 2006-02-24 by Karl Nordstrom
“Earlier, I compared Google and Yahoo Desktop. At that time, I thought Yahoo was better for the types of searches that I do. […] Now I have found a desktop search that I like even more: Copernic [Desktop Search]. It uses fewer system resources than Yahoo and looks a bit cleaner. The first thing that I do when I setup a desktop search is to ensure that it searches only in the directories where I keep my papers. That speeds up the search by making the results more relevant and uses less RAM and CPU in the background.”

Seek No More: Copernic Desktop Search
Posted on 2006-02-23 by Chris Miller
“For a time a while back I started using Google’s Desktop Search program and it was all right, but it didn’t quite have the feel and functionality that I was looking for. Plus, after the whole desktop sidebar deal was integrated into the main program, it just felt too bulky for my tastes. Then a few weeks ago I opened up an old issue of CPU magazine and came across an article by Chris Pirillo about popular desktop search programs. One of the programs mentioned within the article was Copernic, a desktop search program that has won awards from both Cnet and PC World magazine. Copernic will allow you to search in real time because while you system is idle it will automatically index your files. […] A really nice feature of this program is the preview window at the bottom which is very useful when searching e-mail messages and other documents containing a great deal of information. Also, Copernic integrates Windows Media Player into the preview window allowing you to play audio files and video files. Other great features offered are options to refine and sort search results, the ability to manually index new files, and lots of options to add specific locations for Copernic to search and not search. For anyone who wants to organize their documents and/or has a very disorganized file organization system (as anyone who owns a digital camera can attest) this program is a must.”

“Typically speaking, the search function in e-mail software is slow and not very robust. This is where desktop search, of which I am a big fan, comes into play. The one I use in Windows is Copernic [Desktop Search] (www.copernic.com). […] It is the single biggest time-saving tool I have added to my work life in several years. Where finding an e-mail used to take five or 10 minutes, it now takes 30 seconds, and then I am done. The fact that it indexes everything on your drive means that you will find what you are looking for even if it is contained in an e-mail attachment rather than the body of the e-mail. It will even search PDF documents.”

Copernic Desktop Search

“Copernic Desktop Search has become one of my desktop's killer apps. It saves me an incredible amount of time searching for files, emails, etc... - and it is free! Free desktop search tools are nothing new, but this is the best one that I've found. […] Copernic indexes all of the files that I want and it does it when my computer is idle. It also does NOT index files that I don't want it to search (e.g. backups and temp directories). When I search for something in Copernic [Desktop Search] I am almost always amazed at how quickly it helps me find what I'm looking for.”

COPERNIC DESKTOP SEARCH
Posted on 2006-01-18 by avinainnyc
“The total number of files on my computer exceeds 300,000. Trying to straighten out the clutter, and sort all my documents, photos and music in a logical folder system will likely forever be a losing proposition. There's just too much stuff, and I'm just not that organized. But luckily, I don't really care anymore. Why? Because I've got a housekeeper 24/7 to keep tabs on all those files for me. This lifesaver of a program is called Copernic [Desktop Search]. Run it the first time, and it will index every file, every photo, every song on your computer. The next time you need to find a file, just type in a couple of words and Copernic will instantly list the file and preview it for you. If it's a song, an audio player will pop up. For graphics, thumbnail pictures are displayed. Copernic [Desktop Search] also indexes e-mail. So whether your computer is tidy or in a shambles, you'll never have to worry about retrieving documents from within the bowels of myriad subdirectories. I love this program. You will, too.”

Copernic
Posted on 2006-01-16 by Ari
“Desktop Search has become critical in my disorganized life. I used to use Google Desktop Search (GDS) which I loved. But then my friends showed me Copernic. Copernic is a much more efficient search utility. Lets say I know I am looking for an E-mail with information about the Linux dd command. In GDS I would enter Linux DD in the search field than click on search, then filter to E-mail, then filter by sender. All the filtering occurs after the search! It is idiotic! With Copernic you can filter you search BEFORE you search. You choose E-mail and then you can choose text and sender info and then you get results. This really minimizes information overload that is common with GDS and Google in general. I have switched to Copernic and I am not looking back.”

OT - Desktop searching
Posted on 2006-01-13 by PeteS
“If, like me, you sometimes loose routines in too many include files, or you want to search all the files in your Euphoria directory for something. Look no further! I tried using the Google Desktop search tool for this but without using plugins it doesn't count EU files as text and it also only indexes the first x bytes of a file. I've now switched to the free 'Copernic Desktop Search' http://www.copernic.com/en/products/desktop-search/. I've found this to be far better than Googles one - it is much more configurable, you can specify exactly which folders it should index and you can tell it the actual format of file types. i.e. You can specify that the Eu files types like EXW EX etc are actually text, and you can set your own limit on the maximum size of files to index etc etc. Also for the paronoid amongst you, Copernic does not report back to its home on you.”

Windows Desktop Search not good enough
Posted on 2005-12-25 by Drazen Dotlic
“Some time ago I complained about Google desktop search. It's installation sucked so much I was not able to install it. The other contender from a big software company came some time after that - Microsoft launched Windows Desktop Search. […] After using it for about 4 months, I gave up. The app is a memory hog. […] But there is one desktop search app that is worth your attention: Copernic Desktop Search. You might remember Copernic from before when they had various Internet search related products. You get basically the same package as with other desktop search products except that this one works well. Indexing is unobtrusive, search is fast and all the result keywords are clearly highlighted on each and every matched document. It indexes the same kind of documents like all the competitors and actually has better extensibility model for the .NET developers than Microsoft! Highly recommended.”

“With the exception of Excel, this is most valuable software I own. Working for a large company we have a lot of data to track. This does the job, and across networks also. No limits on index size, speed is excellent and recent releases are extremely stable. I have over 20K documents and 2M words index. Tried Yahoo and Google but dumped them both after 30 minutes. Great product. My only request would be the ability to have a history of previous search configurations. Just a clean, fast product with better support than most commercial products. I've actually got a call from Tech support over a previous issue. That was a first for me.”

Find anything on your desktop PC
Posted on 2005-11-25 by Stewart Rogers
“We've mentioned it before in IOS News: Email Edition (subscribe here), but it's worth another mention in the face of growing opposition from Google, Yahoo and MSN... Copernic Desktop Search indexes the contents of your hard drive, understanding and categorising emails (from Outlook, Outlook Express, Notes and Thunderbird amongst others), Office files, contacts, web history and more. You can then easily find anything on your hard drive just like a web search, and filter the results to get exactly what you need. From there, you can review the contents, reply to/forward any email or launch the actual file itself. Google Desktop Search, Yahoo Desktop Search and MSN Desktop Search all provide similar experiences. In our tests though, Google and MSN were too resource heavy (and too US-centric) and Yahoo wasn't as user friendly.”

It has an elegant way of displaying searched documents and mails, which is not present in Google, Yahoo or MSN. Comparing Google and Copernic Desktop Search
Posted on 2005-11-03 by Emochka
“The greatest advantage of Copernic Desktop Search is that you can preview files with a single click in the Copernic window. This ability to quickly view a document before you open it can save time when searching through numerous items. The preview window does not display as well as the files's native application would, but you can see the basic formatting and information to determine if it's the correct item. Another advantage is that after a search is done for the file type you choose, there are links to view results for other types of files that match the search criteria. The winner is - Copernic! Go download it now.”

Copernic is still the best
Posted on 2005-10-09 by Herr Lucifer
“For sure, I can't call it the perfect desktop search, but among all those stuff out there that I have tested for more that one month, this is still the most complete one. Let us be honest; When we download a desktop search, we do it because we want it to find out one missing file among millions of others. However, many of those companies out there give you sth with all those bells and whistles that doesn't fulfill its actual purposem although it does other things. Consider "Google Desktop 2"; it comes in a complete suit of miscellaneous widgets, a slide bar, a search and indexing engine, and many add-ins. Among all these I have found the searching software the worst. It is very primitive and really lags behind modern desktop search software with rich GUI like copernic or Yahoo! desktop search. It also requires you to hack its registry to change its index folder. I have also found it very slow in deleting files-that were removed or delete on my computer-from its index. The only good thing is that you will always have a cashed image of your visited web pages. And then MSN desktop. It is almost worst than GDS, and you have to sacrifice you system stability in return for a software package that scatters itself all over your OS like a malicious spyware. And finally we get to copernic. It is still there in the system tray, for 3 months, silently working on itself, and comes into play only when I need it. It doesn't consume 50 MBs of RAM for a useless sidebar. It doesn't make any wide changes to my Operating System and never adds itself to my system's applications. And it is still the best among all those giant rivals out there.”

Google Desktop update
Posted on 2005-10-07 by Red
“Hmm…just removed Google Desktop from my PC. Why? Well basically Copernic does a better – much better – job of searching my emails. Google’s integration is nice and all, but when it comes down to it I mostly just want to locate an email from last year instantly, see where it is and read it or abstract the address. Simple with Copernic, a bit of a chore with Google (too many clicks, not enough information).”

Copernic desktop search - the best addition to a networker's toolkit I have seen lately
Posted on 2005-09-27 by Troy Angrignon
“I like meeting people and I'm involved in a fair number of activities including my job that requires me to communicate with a large number of people frequently, some of whom I may have only had a few conversations with in the past. My favourite new tool is without a doubt, Copernic Desktop Search from www.copernic.com... It only works on Windows at this point (look for my Mac conversion to Windows blog post soon...) but if you are using Windows Outlook, Exchange, Outlook Express, or Thunderbird, it can index your email, contacts, and files. For Exchange users, it will even index the global address list. I am currently also using Salesforce.com as my primary work CRM. That syncs to my Outlook. Then Copernic indexes my Outlook. So with that one search field on my taskbar, I can find contacts anywhere in my company or in my list of accounts in Salesforce. I can also find every email to, from, or about that person instantly. If I want to find all of the emails that were sent to or from "XYZ.com", I just type that in and instantly have a date ordered list of all of my email related to that company. Overall, you have much more control of everything with Copernic than you do with Google Desktop Search which I found way too clunky and simple for my taste. You can choose which email folders to index and how frequently. You can also choose which contacts to index (personal or personal and Global Address List in Exchange. Overall, this is a great tool and I would highly recommend that other people try it to see if they use it as much as I do on a daily basis.”

Going back to Copernic
Posted on 2005-09-01 by Steve
“I’m back to Copernic from Google Desktop. As I wrote a few days ago, I like the Google Sidebar, but I ran into Outlook related problems… So, my current official recommendation for a desktop search tool is Copernic Desktop Search.”

Search your entire hard drive
Posted on 2005-08-29 by Eileen
“I settled on Copernic Desktop Search and WOW! It took a little while, initially, to index the 50 GIG or so of data I had (how did THAT happen??) but once it was done, it was time to play 'stump the computer.' And I'm delighted to say Copernic found everything I could dream up and ask for, FAST. It put a very user friendly toolbar interface on my screen that I'm still not quite used to using - but slowly, it is becoming a shortcut in my routine.” If you've got a lot of data like I do, and can't stand to be slowed down in your day with long searches, get that Copernic search bar on your screen.”

Outstanding Desktop Search - Copernic
Posted on 2005-08-26 by Nick
“I don't think I've gushed over Copernic yet, have I? […] I won't be using Google Desktop 2.0, because I've downloaded and installed Copernic. This program is exactly what I need and want in a desktop search program. This thing really rocks. It searches for any file containing any text and finds things instantly… It also indexes and searches my email almost as fast as I can type. It's a rockin' cool app, plus, it is free, plus, it is written in Delphi.”

GDS: Quick Romance
Posted on 2005-08-26 by Jim Allen
“By contrast, Copernic allowed me to EASILY limit the search to PDF files, AND to my E:/Legal directory tree. Result: files found, within nanoseconds. No confusion. Just raw on-the-money goodness. Kicker: the preview screen; I can peek into a file’s innards, without starting up the native app which created the file, whether wpd, pdf, doc, etc.! Further, Copernic tells me exactly what it’s indexing, as it indexes, while also permitting me to tap “start” and “pause”. By contrast, Google allows only the “pause” action, apparently convinced that only it knows when and how it’s best to index my machine.”

The window of opportunity for Google
Posted on 2005-08-24 by Neville Hobson
“Well, I tried Google Desktop 2.0 - and uninstalled it pretty quickly, just as I did when I tried out the first version. I just don't like it. Far too many bells and whistles for my taste. I don't want a dashbaord or sidebar, at least not one like this. I'll wait for the one that comes along that really is a seamless part of my operating system. What I want is an effective and easy-to-use search tool that will find the things I'm looking for wherever they are, whether on the net or on my desktop, or on any computer on my network, and whatever the file type. Google, MSN, etc, can do many of these things. For me, though, Copernic Desktop Search is the tool I like best. Every time I use it, it produces the exact results I want. And the Google tool is a big resource hog especially when it's indexing. No, I really don't like it so it's still Copernic for me.”

Desktop Search Engines - A way to improve your productivity.
Posted on 2005-08-19 by Herr Lucifer
“You can choose among Google, Yahoo, Msn, X1 or Copernic applications. […] finally, i downloaded Copernic, the lightest and almost the best; both in performance and UI. It is also the most flexible one. The indexing is lightning fast and the search results are really convenient. On my hard disk i have almost more than a million files that i use my brain and windows built-in search previously to find a target document. But now, searching among this number of files take less than a second for me, thanks to the highly tuned and flexible searching capabilities of copernic. If you have so many files like me, and now and then wonder where the things have gone, i recommend downloading and installing Copernic Desktop search as soon as possible. It really boost your productivity and our life!”

Copernic Adds Firefox and Mobile User Support
Posted on 2005-08-01 by Jason Clarke
“Copernic released version 1.6 of their Desktop Search program on July 25th, and they've finally added the feature that I've been asking for over the past 6 months: pausing indexing for mobile users when running on battery power. Thank you! They've also added full support for Firefox users, which gets another big "Thank You!" from me. Copernic Desktop Search was rated #1 out of a number of desktop search utilities by Slate back in December, and this release shows that they just continue to make it better and better.”

Copernic Desktop Search 1.6
Posted on 2005-07-26 by cpbotha
“An important new feature is the "pause indexing when running on battery power" option, especially useful for laptop users. I used GDS for a while, but Copernic offers finer-grained control over what's indexed and what isn't. Together with the laptop-friendliness aspect, Copernic makes a convincing pitch.”

Using it Daily and still Smiling

“It's not often that I am truly wowed and when it happens it's sweet. Something simple that packs big time gains in my productivity. This ones FREE. I was having issues with elaborate directory structures and e-mail folders. I started using g-mail, liked the concept of pulling up what I wanted from a big database without the time consuming hassle of creating elaborate directories and folders. Copernic brings you the similiar concept for all that resides on your hardrive, but without the security breaches of Google. Copernic 1.5 resides on your hardrive but doesn't transmit your data to anyone else… Copernic 1.5 will search your hardrive and bring back the results you seek FAST. Word.doc's, PDF, e-mail, jpeg's. It will sort them by date, show the path. Simple to use, uses minimal system resources, you can simply create a folder...stuff your resumes in it and fish them out easily later. Speeds up your harvest and retrieval.”

“So I switched over to Copernic [Desktop Search], a tool provided for free, that deals exclusively in desktop search technology...and DAMN its the sweetest piece of software I have installed in a long time. This one auto-indexes when your machine is idle as to not suck up all your processing power. I have had it installed for a couple of hours and my machine is fully mapped. The search time is lightening fast..it actually searches by the individual letters as you type them out, reducing the number of possibilities as your term or phrase is hacked out. Its easy and intuitive too…I am serious - everyone - you need this tool. Trust me.”

Its weakest point: Too slow! […] There are lots of desktop search programs around. For me, I'm currently using Copernic Desktop Search. It is fast and reliable, and user friendly too.
What this software do is, it indexes our documents. Therefore we are able to search them out faster. Windows XP NTFS Indexing Service? Nowhere near it!”

Find Your Stuff

“If you are anything like me, you have an ever growing amount of “stuff” accumulating on your computer hard drive. It may or may not be well organized. Even if your “stuff” is organized it can still be quite a task searching for that exact piece of information you need from your “stuff”. This is where desktop search tools come in. […] My personal favorite is not one of the search engine giants, but Copernic: a free tool from the makers of Copernic Agent. Copernic Desktop Search searches Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files, Acrobat PDFs, Outlook emails, and all popular music, picture and video formats. Copernic also searches your browser history, favorites, and contacts.”

By clicking any of the search results it will show you a preview of the document with the keywords already highlighted. It’s fast and doesn’t use much of your machine’s resources. New and updated files and new emails are indexed as soon as it gets into your hard drive.”

Recently I downloaded Copernic [Desktop Search], and have had such great success that I am forsaking all other desktop search products for it. It allows me to "work smarter by being dumber." What does that mean? I no longer have to precisely remember where "that email with that certain Word document" is. I simply type a few keywords into Copernic and - poof - it finds it and presents it to me, ready to use. I can free up my mind for the work at hand, not the administrivia that drags me down.”

Search Engine news

“I got generally good results from both the Google and Yahoo! desktop search engines, but I was most impressed with a little known free product calls Copernic Desktop Search from Copernic Technologies (www.copernic.com/). In addition to letting you search the web, this Windows program also looks through your e-mail, music, pictures, contacts, web bookmarks, web history and just about anything else that might be stored within a file on your drive. In that way, it's similar to Google and Yahoo! but I found it to be a bit less intrusive than those other programs which would slow down my computer occasionally. I also find it very easy to use and, considering that it's free, it's worth checking out.”

Desktop Search Review Roundup
Posted on 2005-05-06 by The Uber-Review
“If you have been searching for Desktop Search Reviews. You can call your search off because we already did the work you. Enjoy University of Wisconsin-Madison's e-Business Consortium if you only look at one review, make sure it's this one. This is the "mother of all desktop search reviews". They look at 12, yes 12, desktop search tools (I bet you didn't even know that there was 12 desktop search tools). The review is ultra unbiased, ultra through. They ran benchmark testing on 6 different categories which are broken up into 35 different sub-categories. I think you can tell by now this is the true uber-review. Final verdict of their review: #1 Copernic with a score of 4.11 out of 5. […] Three of these reviews give the highest marks to Copernic and another has it tied for the top score. So one can only assume that Copernic is doing something right. Therefore the Uber-Review Top Choice goes to Copernic.”

“… everyone should go and download Copernic [Desktop Search]. You may have heard of Google desktop, well Copernic is like that but without the ’sending your data to Google over the web’ bit. […] Why is this useful? Well, apart from the obvious ease of use, if you’re like me and have about three hard-drive’s data on your machine from where you’ve shunted it across everytime you upgrade your PC then you probably are stuck with several different filing systems. Copernic means that you can immediately skip through all the system stuff and get right back to the file you’re looking for without having to remember where you put it or wait five minutes for the Windows search to give you a result. Yes, I know I’m going on about this, but I really do love this software and I never really realised before just how useful it would be. It’s also free, so that’s a huge plus.”

X1, Copernic and other indexers
Posted on 2005-05-05 by j-p takala
“For most of my purposes, Copernic is still superior. With Copernic it is simple to limit your searches to specific types of files (and you can also tell it what extensions to earch, e.g., *.rtf or *.nb), to specific dates, file sizes and folders... Copernic also finds partial words, which is functionally the same as using wildcards in Orbis; it is a practical necessity for comprehensive searchers in agglutinative languages. Google DTS only recognizes whole words. You can, however, set Copernic to find whole words only.”

Couldn't resist...
Posted on 2005-04-18 by Exjoburger
“I must say that I'm impressed with the [Copernic Desktop Search] search engine's user interface. It clean and well thought out. Under the Search box are dropdowns to refine search by file type, size, date and even folder. Okay, so even Windows 2000 and XP have this. It's the options that Copernic gives you for building the search index which are so powerful. There are options to include or exclude folders and file types from the index: C:\Program Files was excluded by default - which makes sense - but you can remove this exclusion. You can add folders to be searched for documents, pictures or music. In the advanced options is where it really gets fun - you can add new file types to index (as text). The search results features a preview pane, something that Google Desktop Search is missing.”

Desktop search engines
Posted on 2005-04-11 by Angelos Petropoulos
“Looks like desktop search engines is the new battlefront. The alternatives: Google MSN Yahoo! Copernic. For the time being, Yahoo’s offering is not a real option for me, as it does not offer real-time indexing (only scheduled indexing). This is a pain when using laptops, as you normally don’t have them on overnight; you simply turn it on when you use it and turn it off when you don’t. For me smart (i.e. depending on load) real-time indexing is a must. From the remaining three alternatives, Google’s desktop search (GDS) is the weakest. The area it suffers the most in is the search results. You have as much control over them as you have over the results of a web search; virtually none. I can understand why they chose to make GDS search results so similar to web search results, but I am not a novice user and I want more control. […] MSN Desktop search has a better deskbar than GDS and a more powerful search results window. You can filter and sort, which will be enough most of the time. Overall it is not bad at all. Unfortunately for all three contenders (but fortunately for us) there is somebody who has been doing this for a little while longer and has a lot more to offer; [Copernic]. In my opinion Copernic desktop search is by far the best, with many options and great features.”

Friday Favorite: Copernic Desktop Search
Posted on 2005-04-07 by Dave Rogers
“Over the years, I tried a number of different methods for indexing and searching my cache, but never found one that hit the spot. […] Then I discovered Copernic Desktop Search (CDS). The surprise was that it took me so long. I've been a happy user of Copernic Agent since its 1.x days, but somehow missed the debut of CDS. Better late than never. […] After the initial index is built, CDS is remarkably well behaved; ongoing updates are nearly imperceptible. And it all is wrapped in Copernic's straightforward, no-nonsense UI. CDS doesn't have the publicity machines of its competitors at Google and Yahoo! And it doesn't have the premium cachet of X1. But in a desktop-to-desktop shootout, I think CDS comes out on top.”

Desktop Search: Copernic Desktop
Posted on 2005-03-14 by Angela Booth.
”After years' of coping with the nightmare of Windows' native Search tool, it's wonderful to have a wide choice of good search applications. I've tested Google's new offering, but it slows my machine. Copernic Desktop, on the other hand, doesn’t. It accommodates the way I work, and it's finding material I haven’t seen in years. It's a freebie, and I heartily recommend it.”

An implementation of a Copernic Desktop Search Custom Extractor in C#
Posted on 2005-03-03 by Oliver Sturm.
”Copernic Desktop Search 1.5 beta is currently available to the public. One of the most important new features was for me the introduction of an extensibility API. […] I’ve taken the plunge and tried to implement a custom extractor for CDS. […] Once everything was in place, I found the whole mechanism working flawlessly. CDS would index my files and I could find them when entering search words that I knew were in the files. […[ thanks to Copernic for listening to those of your users who suggested an extensibility feature!.”

Goodbye, X1. Hello (again), Copernic!
Posted on 2005-02-13 by Ed Bott.
”For the past four months, I’ve been evaluating two desktop search programs: X1 and Copernic Desktop Search. I’ve given each one a fair test, and the contest is over. Copernic wins. […] X1 is just too buggy. Three times in the four months I’ve been evaluating X1 version 5, it has completely lost track of the index to my files, or stopped indexing new messages for several days, or lost the ability to specify folders in my main Outlook message store. That’s annoying, to say the least. It’s fatal when the whole point of the program is to offer me instant access to information that I need, when I need it, usually when I’m working on a deadline trying to pull together a proposal or an article. On all three occasions, it took roughly an hour to delete the existing X1 index and build a new one. That’s just not acceptable. The developers of X1 have acknowledged that these bugs exist.”

THE Best program I’ve installed EVER!!!
Posted on 2004-12-18 Joanna
”I write a lot of user reviews on download.com, either to moan or praise my latest download, but never have I found myself actually summarizing it as ""the best EVER"" - but this is my honest opinion of Copernic Desktop Search, which has revolutionized how I use my computer. Everything I need is literally at my fingertips now with one click on the system tray. I recently downloaded Google's Desktop Search and hated it. Being a hardline fan of Google's other services for years, I always thought they were 'the best at everything'. Well, for once I have to accept they can't be perfect at everything - Copernic have completely outshone them here and have triumphed in the desktop search 'war'. So far, this program has been able to find anything I've needed in seconds - without even having to completely type what I'm looking for. I was amazed at how fast results appeared after only typing perhaps a few letters of a keyword in a particular document. If I can't remember where an email from last year is archived or where I buried an old document in my myriad of directories, I simply start typing the keyword and one by one the answers start to appear in the Outlook-style results window. And most file types have a preview window (which conveniently display at the point where your (highlighted) search word occurs) so you don't even have to open the file's associated program to read it. (For example, you can look at old emails without actually having to open Outlook). This preview window will even act as a web browser if you are searching through internet favorites/history! Another thing that sets it miles ahead of Google's Desktop (beta) search program is the speed that it indexes (updates) the files. A few clicks and in less than a minute my Copernic was up to date with my latest files. The configuration options are impressive - you decide which folders and files types you want Copernic to search for. You also decide how to view the results. By default the 'view' is set to standard but the detailed view is so much better so give it a try (click the button on top of the results pane). It's not 'cluttered' as the name just suggest - it just adds a little extra info, like providing a thumbnail for your image results. I personally have used it most for searching through old emails - it's actually easier than using Outlook's own ""Find"" function! I can just type the date (between, on etc) and it will instantly show me the archived emails on that day or days. I honestly cannot think of anything this lacks for hunting for stuff on your PC. You will never use the Windows inbuilt search function again as it will seem slow next to this.”

Desktop Search
Posted on 2004-12-01 by Chris Pirillo.
”… the FREE Copernic Desktop Search is blowing everything else out of the water. CDS takes your search terms as you type and searches your entire hard drive. As you add more terms to your search, you see your search results narrowing down right before your eyes. As you scroll through the results list of files or e-mails, a preview is shown on the bottom of the screen. Just click “open” and the file or e-mail opens using its original application. Nothing could be simpler!”

Google Desktop Criticism
Posted on 2004-10-21 by Mark
I've been using Copernic Desktop Search for some time and I have to admit I'm very happy with it. It's FAST, stable and does many things that Google Desktop doesn't do (yet). Nevertheless, I wanted to give the Google Desktop a try. I uninstalled it later the same day. It is a good product itself, but you don't need it if you already have something that is FAR better (Copernic). Some of the features Copernic has and GDS lacks: it indexes attachments; it presents you two things – a list of found documents, and the preview of currently selected result; it is not using web interface to display results, so browsing through them is far more convenient and faster; it starts searching while you are typing, presenting you results even before your query is completed, adding next letter makes the query more precise and less results displayed; and more - try it yourself.

“Very useful Windows integrated search bar; quick searching; previews of emails and documents found; ability to use basic features without having to open the concerned software (ex. "Forward" and "Reply" functions for e-mails); and so on! If I need to search the Web, I open a browser. Copernic Desktop Search is the perfect tool to use quickly and efficiently without even having to be connected on the Internet. I came back to it after trying several competitors, including the new (and disappointing, lets be honest) Google Desktop Search. Everyone should give it a try; after a few days, you wonder how you were once able to work without it.”

Copernic Desktop Search (CDS)
Posted on 2004-10-17 by J. W. Fisher
“I've been using the free version of CDS since early September and it's proven itself to be one of the most powerful tools I've ever used. I believe it's the best tool on the market, hands down. On my office laptop, with heavy use of 2 shares containing many thousands of legal and sales documents, it's been simply invaluable. I couldn't function without it. On my home "master" server (550k files), it's been similarly invaluable. There are only so many ways to organize the accumulated files of years and years of hobby information, using CDS I can locate nearly anything almost immediately.”

Desktop Search from AOL, Google & Others

“I have to agree about copernic desktop search. It’s far superior to google. I’m a great fan of Google. As soon as I saw copernic’s version, I thought whey Google didn’t think of a product like this. When google released it’s version yesterday, it was like my wish fulfilled. But, I was greatly disappointed about it’s features. It is very very inferior to copernic. Copernic actually filters the files, where as Google searches for files. So, the copernic version will take you just seconds to search for a file”

Google Steps to the Plate and Bunts. Copernic Hits a Grand Slam
Posted on 2004-10-15 by I. Sirsha
“[…] I installed and quickly saw that it solves almost every problem I have with Google Desktop Search and LookOut as well as added several very useful features I hadn't thought of. […] The best thing so far about Copernic is that it offers the option of adding text file types to index. So I added .cs, .aspx, .asp immediately just to test. It worked, of course, finding "selectedindex" in a .cs file on my desktop only seconds after adding that file extension to the list. Almost every file we developers deal with is a text file; this option should be part of the boilerplate featureset for a desktop search tool. […] Copernic, on the other hand, has a long list of great features and seems to be a well-planned solid offering that exploits the power of the desktop. It is so far ahead of LookOut and Google Desktop Search that, if I were one of the big boys, I would just call the game and try to buy them.”
